It has been nearly a year since the war between Ukraine and Russia began. On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in the morning, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s announcement of a "special military operation" for the "demilitarization’ and ‘denazification’ of Ukraine. Russia demanded that NATO not perform any military activity in Eastern Europe or Ukraine. He claims that Ukraine was never an independent state. Although Ukraine sought independence from Russia. Before gaining independence, it had deep social and cultural ties with Russia. Following the failed invasion in 2014, which claimed nearly 14,000 lives, Eventually, those connections faded.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, several countries came to Ukraine's aid. Russia claims Ukraine in the same way that India claims the United Kingdom or Spain claims the Philippines. Past imperialism cannot justify present-day expansionism. Eastern Ukraine has always been close to Russia, whereas Western Ukraine is governed by democracy and elections overseen by the United States.
The countries that condemned the act of invasion are the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia. According to a press release issued by the UK government in December 2022, the UK has donated more than 1,000 metal detectors and hundreds of bomb de-arming kits to war-torn Ukraine as part of its military assistance. The Defense Secretary, Rt Hon Ben Wallace MP, said: "Russia’s use of landmines and targeting of civilian infrastructure underline the shocking cruelty of Putin’s invasion. This latest package of UK support will help Ukraine safely clear land and buildings as it reclaims its rightful territory."
After continuous assistance was acquired by Ukraine from varying world leaders, Russia threatened that if anybody interfered, they might face severe consequences. But America continued to show support for Ukraine. To cut down their revenue generation, world economies came together to impose a price cap on petroleum products that have been seeing profits from India and China, the only buyers of Russia (due to the Russian invasion, countries imposed restrictions on Russia that cut down imports and exports).
Why it matters?
The war in Ukraine has led to national security concerns for the United States and its allies. The Department of Defense's continued efforts, as well as military assistance and humanitarian aid to Ukraine, will be critical to successfully assisting and deterring Russia from further aggression in Ukraine and other areas.
In addition, it has been providing economic aid, diplomatic support, and crippling economic sanctions against Moscow. The US cannot tolerate Russian aggression against Ukraine because it will only heighten tensions with the US.
As of January 18, 2023, the United States has approximately invested $27.5 billion in security assistance to prove its commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
In the aftermath of World War II, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was formed to provide security and military assistance when needed and to counter any USSR aggression. It is an engine of democratization and is supposed to support democratisation. This was seen as a threat to Moscow so in response, it created the WARSAW pact. This pact is the same as NATO. If any one member country is under threat, every other WARSAW member country will defend it.
Over the past 25 years, NATO countries have been crawling toward Russia. Former Soviet states have become NATO countries. This has provoked Putin to restrict Ukraine's ability to go into NATO and lose its claim that it never had. It hurts its security interests.
Now that the US wants to maintain security, it is assisting Ukraine in avoiding defeat against Russia. Are there profits to be made out of war?
While EU countries suffer, there have been complaints regarding the profits acquired by America by making fortunes from the war. The U.S. rejected Europe's complaints. "The rise in gas prices in Europe is caused by Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and Putin's energy war against Europe, period," a spokesperson for Biden's National Security Council said. Exports of liquefied natural gas from the U.S. to Europe "increased dramatically and enabled Europe to diversify away from Russia," the NSC spokesperson said.
At the same time, this invasion is pushing the world into recession with inflation, supply, and demand. There is now demand for gas as other countries seek to reduce their reliance on Russian gas. It costs four times as much in America as it does in Europe. Additionally, as European countries send their weapons to Ukraine, there is a rise in demand for American-made military kits. When EU leaders accused America of having higher gas prices at the G20 summit in Bali, Biden seemed to have acted unaware of the situation. French President Emmanuel Macron said high U.S. gas prices were not "friendly," and Germany’s economy minister has called on Washington to show more "solidarity" and help reduce energy costs.
